FIRST STEPS

Is Tentmaking for Me?

How do I know if tentmaking is for me? Often guidance comes in un-dramatic ways. A calling does not have to be to a specific country; it may be to use our God-given skills in a number of countries in our lifetime or perhaps for a shorter period of time in our careers. Guidance may involve considering available information about different countries and job opportunities, and praying through the various possibilities. What is important is that we ask the following questions:

  • Do I desire to serve the Lord? “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Ps 37:4
  • Am I reading His word and seeking to do His will? “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” Ps 119:105
  • Am I willing to go overseas? Some people enjoy travel and experiencing different cultures; some don’t. God gives us different gifts and personalities. He usually uses our natural gifts and spiritual gifts, with plans that complement the way He has made us. But excitement is not enough. We need to check our motives carefully, and we need to be equipped professionally and spiritually. Tentmaking is not a bed of roses and often requires real sacrifice. But God will supply our needs as we trust Him (Phil 4:13).

Stepping Stones from Here to There

If tentmaking is for you, then there are stepping stones to get from here to there. They involve becoming experienced in your chosen profession, being in fellowship with your church (your future sending base), and learning cross-cultural communication and other ministry skills.

Read up on countries of interest to you. Check out the development and prospects of the profession or industry you are in. If you are working, are there opportunities with your employer to work overseas? Talk to your boss about your interests.

If you have yet to choose a career, or are open to change, consider training as a teacher of English (TESL/TEFL). Teachers are employable around the world. Some credential programs require 1-2 years of training. There is also intensive training that can be completed in as little as five weeks.

Consider a short term trip to explore further. We can help you meet tentmakers on the field. Seek the counsel of your mentors, pastors and friends. Pray about the responses you get. Talk to God and seek His Word. God will lead you, step by step, into what He wants you to do (Ps 25:12).

Talk to us. As a network that sends and supports tentmakers, we understand the challenges. We can help you consider your options, provide career counseling and spiritual guidance as you wait upon the Lord and prepare yourself.

Talk to your pastor and/or missions committee; you may need to explain your vision and perspective carefully so that they see and understand the strategic importance of your desire to work overseas for God. Then your church can support you and perhaps formally send and commission you. They can partner with a sending agency like us in praying for you and keeping in touch with you on a regular basis.

Be a blessing to your supporters as they are to you. By supporting you, they get a piece of the action in missions. Your testimony can also challenge them to seek God’s purpose in their lives and to live missionally on the home turf.
